A transmission fluid change keeps the gearbox in your car shifting smoothly and stops it from cooking itself over time. Most manufacturers set an interval for an automatic transmission fluid change, often somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 km, though towing, stop-start driving and hot conditions can shorten that. What Happens During a Transmission Fluid Change
First we confirm what your car actually needs, because not every gearbox is the same. Some take a simple drain and refill, others need a full flush, and many modern autos have specific fill procedures and fluid temperatures that have to be hit exactly. We check your manufacturer’s spec so the right fluid goes in.
A typical job runs like this:
- Drain the old fluid and inspect it for metal, clutch material or signs of internal wear
- Drop and clean the pan where fitted, and replace the transmission filter and pan gasket if your gearbox uses them
- Refill with the correct genuine or OEM-spec fluid, not a cheap one-size-fits-all substitute
- Set the fluid level to the correct operating temperature on sealed units
- Take it for a road test to check shifts are smooth and clean
